Hikes along the Levadas, the artificial irrigation channels that crisscross the whole island, for example, are beautiful. Spectacular cliff walls and fertile valleys will be passed en route. It is well worth ascending the central mountain range from whence fascinating views are to be had over the entire island.
The most beautiful dive sites are to be found on the south coast and on Porto Santo Island. Dive bases in Caniço, Machico and Funchal offer lessons as well as the corresponding equipment. Deep-sea diving opportunities are an attractive alternative. Boat tours depart from Funchal Marina and offer great excursions to go dolphin watching for example. The moderate winds experienced around the island mean that conditions are good for both surfers and paragliding enthusiasts. Surf sites may be found along the south coast whilst the necessary equipment providers and schools are based in Funchal.
Those preferring to stick to solid ground may spend some time at one of the two island golf courses or explore the more remote areas on horseback. Those who enjoy the white sports will find public tennis and squash courts in Funchal. More unusual activities include jeep safaris and helicopter tours over the island.
