The excellent surfing conditions around Cabarete have already been mentioned, with an extremely constant northwesterly trade wind blowing inland and shallow waters for beginners close to the coast. The selection of surfing schools and equipment is accordingly large. Numerous hotels and agencies offer a wide range of water sports options on the other beaches, from water skiing to diving and from paragliding to deep sea fishing.
Those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land must not remain in their sun lounger however: the majority of the hotels boast tennis courts as well as an extensive leisure programme that features aerobics and fitness training. The 18-hole Playa Dorada golf course was designed by the famous American architect, Robert Trent Jones, whilst other courses on the coast boast fantastic backdrops for lovers of the sport to practice their putts and swings. Iguana Mama in Cabarete lost its status as an insider's tip long ago; the much-praised operator offers mountain biking tours, white water and kayak trips, cave walking, riding trips and other adventure excursions.
