The Red Sea is a paradise for divers and snorkellers. With its coral reefs and tropical fish, it counts amongst the most beautiful dive sites in the world.
Around 100 dive bases along the coast of Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada provide equipment and training for all underwater athletes. Safaga and Hurghada beside the Red Sea are amongst the top spots for surfing in Egypt. The constant offshore winds reach strengths of up to 7 Beaufort. The coast off Dahab is ideal for beginners and less experienced surfers. Ras Sudr in the Gulf of Suez and Sharm el Sheikh are also very popular amongst surfers. Many hotels along the coast house surf schools and board hire services.
Egypt doesn't only have beautiful beaches along the Red Sea coast, but also on the Mediterranean. Popular bathing resorts include Maamura and Agami to the west of Alexandria where wonderful beaches and a lively party scene await visitors.
Sports may also be undertaken on dry land, with golf for example, becoming increasingly popular beside the Red sea, in the desert or in the Nile oasis. Furthermore, many hotels with extensive sports options such as tennis, squash and aerobics mean that guests may stay in shape whilst on holiday. Those who enjoy horse riding will come across many good-value opportunities for riding and lessons in Egypt. A trip into the desert either aboard an all-terrain vehicle or, in a truly traditional style, atop a camel, is an unforgettable experience. It is possible to stay overnight in several oases and to marvel at the unbelievably clear, star-lit sky.
