Despite the lengthy coastline, the mountain ranges and deserts characterise the ways of life of the Moroccans. In the rural areas, the people still wear the traditional djellaba, a wide, floor length shirt that protects against the sun, wind and dust. In the towns and cities, jeans are becoming an increasingly common phenomenon. Morocco's music is as diverse as the ethnic groups. Alongside ala Andalusia, an Arabic-Spanish music that was brought to Morocco from Cordoba in the 9th century, exists the traditional antiphony of the Berber people that is only accompanied by clapping and drumming, and the Black African rhythmic gnaua that can often be heard in the weekly markets. Rock and pop music may also be heard in Morocco, although these have noticeably been influenced by the musical culture.
The traditional and modern clash in the handicrafts, architecture and art as well as in the festivals. The Moussems, which were originally religious festivals, are an increasingly popular tourist attraction whilst traditional festivals may still be witnessed in the more rural areas however.
