It is said that Cyprus is the island where the gods take their holidays; surely also because of the delicious and varied meals here. Ingredients are always fresh as most of the food originates from the island. Specialities deriving from the island such as kebabs (lamb or other types of meat on skewers that are grilled over coals), afelia (pork doused in wine) and tava (a stew with meat, herbs and onion) should all definitely be sampled. The best insight into authentic cuisine may be had through the mezedes, a selection of cold and warm starters that also serve as a main course. Fresh fruit is to be had in abundance and those who love sweets should definitely sample desserts such as baklava, pastry filled with custard. Guests will normally be served at the table, but at the bar itself in bars.
Alongside the excellent wine, brandy sour, a blend of Cypriot brandy, lemon syrup, soda and angostura, is considered something of a national beverage.
