Three completely different holiday resorts have established themselves around Puerto Plata, offering something for every taste and budget.
Directly to the east of the largest city in the north of the Caribbean, is the wonderful Playa Dorada, the "Golden Beach", the like named luxurious holiday resort with exclusive hotels, restaurants, shopping centres, as well as golf courses and riding centres.
The former Jewish settlement of SosĂșa further to the east has, in recent years, been transformed into a lively holiday resort, with it consciously giving itself the title of the "Ibiza of the Dominican Republic". In the narrow alleys of the centre countless bars, clubs and pubs await revellers just as the rich and varied sports options on the beautiful long beaches draw in more active holidaymakers and families.
Even further to the east is the former fishing village of Cabarete, which, with its mile long sandy beach, has become a Mecca for fans of water sports. Strong breezes and constant surf mean the place is a reliable spot for surfing. Numerous beach bars and traditional shops create a jolly atmosphere.
Thus, holidaymakers are offered a choice between sophisticated luxury, a lively party atmosphere and a sporty ambience that lie within a few miles of each other. What all resorts do have in common is the consistently good weather, with cool breezes blowing in off the sea as well as the fantastic beaches with crystal-clear waters and green surrounds.
