Night-time revellers will find the largest selection of nightclubs, restaurants and discos in the island capital of Funchal.
Particularly in the hotel district, countless restaurants and clubs line the streets and many hotels also run their own nightclubs. The Baccara in the Hotel Casino Park is especially popular and offers entertainment in the form of a laser show and live performances. The island's youth meet at the Jet Set dance temple in the town centre as well as in the Bar Salsa Latina that draws in visitors with its live Latin American beats. The traditional, emotion-filled songs of the fado are mainly heard at the weekend in the traditional bar, Marcelino Pão e Vinho.
The selection of restaurants is also at its largest in the capital although visitors will also find a bar to suit their taste and budget in the smaller towns. Typical Madeira cuisine is served up at O Boieiro in Caniço as well as at the Brisa Mar in Seixal. Traditional dishes as well as fantastic views out over the sea from a cliff may be enjoyed at the Inn & Art in Caniço de Baixo. The island's festivals are a particularly special experience. Often having a religious significance and commencing with a church mass, the festivals are brought to a conclusion with cracking fireworks, copious amounts of food, drink and music, often into late in the night.
