The nights are especially long in Cairo, with the selection of entertainment venues being particularly diverse. Offers range from cosy bars with an Oriental ambience to nightclubs with exciting belly dancing shows. Jackie's Joint in Downtown is said to be the number one nightclub. The oldest jazz club in Egypt, the Cairo Jazz Club, still offers live bands with dixie, jazz and swing today. The Nile-side cities of Luxor and Assuan both boast a pretty 'corniche', as the promenades beside the Nile are known. People gather here to watch the sun go down, stroll beside the river and, sooner or later, pick out a little café or bar in which to finish off the evening. Folklore shows with belly dancing are on offer in the cities' large hotels, where nightclubs are also located. The latter can also be said for the nightlife scene beside the Red Sea and in Sharm el Sheikh, the Hard Rock Café plays rock and pop 'golden oldies'.
A particularly special experience is the weekly Sound and Light Show that plays out before the pyramids and sphinx at Giza. Amusing and informative, the past is brought back to life during this foray through the centuries of Egyptian history.
